I know I’m supposed to be on a hiatus, but I couldn’t pass this one up.

Rod Dreher asks a great question:

Which aging rock stars would you most like to hear perform one of their great albums, and which album? That’s easy for me: I’d give my next paycheck to hear the Rolling Stones perform “Exile on Main Street.”

The Allman Brothers Band – Seven Turns

Not the absolute finest release of their catalog, but it was their comeback album and made my musical life richer by introducing me to one Warren Haynes. And Dickey Betts would have to rejoin the band. Oh yeah, they could also throw in “One Way Out” and another 20 minute rendition of “Whipping Post” just for the heck of it.

Steve Earle – Guitar Town

Earle’s first album and my favorite of his for reasons of taste and sentiment. Earle was 30 and had yet to cook himself completely on heroin and coke when this album was released and the whole thing resonates with a youthful energy he has never been able to recapture. This was the kick in the seat that country music desperately needed, and still needs. Where is the next Steve Earle anyway?

The Blasters – The Blasters

A seminal album of the 80s rockabilly revival. Harder than hardcore, faster than punk, and an important reminder that there was more to 80s music than Madonna and Flock of Seagulls.

Stevie Wonder – Stevie Wonder’s Original Musiquarium

’nuff said.

 

Drive-By Truckers – Southern Rock Opera

Their magnum opus. A meditation on all things southern.

 

Arc Angels – Arc Angels

If there were any justice in music, these guys would still be together and would be one of the biggest bands in the world

 

John Hiatt – Slow Turning

Hiatt’s never released a dud, but out of all of his albums I own this one gets the most play.
